The Metropolitan Area Network is the “mesh” grid
pattern formed by the multiple wireless access points set
up in your neighborhood. The wireless access point closest
to your house sends a clear signal to your modem, which then
channels it into your computer and lets you connect to the
Internet quickly and easily.
“Fixed wireless technology” is what brings the
power of wireless technology to the comfort of your home.
It is specially designed for stationary users enjoying home
Internet access and is not intended for mobile users.
No, the connection from your home to the Internet is wireless,
so you don’t need a phone line for direct access.
It’s easy! Call EarthLink at or submit
your request online to have us verify that service is
available in your area. We’ll contact you to discuss
your installation method and get you started on your way to
enjoying the benefits of fixed wireless high-speed Internet.
See our current service plans on our Home
page.
Yes, we’ll upgrade your EarthLink dial-up account when
you convert your service to EarthLink High Speed. Our plans
include up to 20 hours of dial-up access per month.
Absolutely. Using our service does not affect your personal
domain. You can also program your domain email to forward
into your EarthLink inbox without giving up your account.
An Ethernet network card allows your computer to connect to
the wireless modem. You must have an installed and working
Ethernet network interface card (NIC) to access the service.
If you have an Ethernet network card, a jack shaped like a
phone plug-in will be on the back of your personal computer
(PC), but it will be a bit wider than a phone jack. Look for
this symbol next to your Ethernet jack. Ethernet
cards are available at your local computer or electronics
store.
Note: Make sure you look for it on the computer tower or base,
not on the back of the monitor.
EarthLink provides two ways to install, depending on where
you live within the Metropolitan Area Network. Customers qualified
for self-installation will receive a starter kit with a step-by-step
Quick
Start Guide and the few parts needed for an easy and successful
self-installation.
Customers qualified for professional installation will also
receive the starter kit, but will schedule an appointment
for a home visit. Professionals will install an external antenna
(a small box that sends and receives signal like an antenna)
to the exterior of your home— usually near the roof
or on an eave— and connect it through a thin cable to
the integrated modem you received by mail.
Professional installation is a complementary service for our
pre-qualified customers.
